CHOOSING YOUR AIR COMPRESSOR
Identify how you are going to use your compressor.
- The use of multiple tools requires more flow (CFM).
- Larger 80 gallon compressors work best for continuous, all-day use with multiple users.
Review the flow (CFM) and pressure (PSI) requirements of your air tools.
- CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) is the amount of air your air tools require in order to run efficiently and the amount of air produced by the pump.
- PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) is the amount of stored energy in your air tank. The higher the PSI the longer the run time on your air tools.
Be sure your CFM on the air compressor meets or exceeds the CFM requirements of the air tools you plan to use so you are not under‐powered.
NOTE: Flow is cumulative but pressure is not. For example, if you want to run two tools at the same time, add the CFM of both tools and multiply that by 1.5 to ensure peak performance.
Determine where you will use your compressor.
- Portable compressors provide the flexibility to have compressed air anywhere.
- Stationary compressors do not move from site to site. They are larger and typically offer more power.
COMPRESSOR CONSIDERATIONS
Oil-free or Oil Lubricated
- Oil-free pumps are virtually maintenance-free and allow easier cold weather starting.
- Oil lubricated pumps provide longer life and higher performance.
Belt Drive or Direct Drive
- Belt drive compressors have longer life and less vibration.
- Direct drive compressors have no pulleys and no belts to replace.
Vertical or Horizontal
- Vertical compressors take up less floor space.
- Horizontal compressors fit nicely under work benches and are easier to transport.
Single Stage or Two Stage Air Compressors
- Single stage compressors are more suitable for single tool use.
- Two stage compressors provide higher operating pressure for longer tool run time. Two stage compressors are best suited when operating high air consumption tools, or more than one air tool at a time.
*Two stage compressors at 175 PSI can operate more than one air tool at a time.
